This is the historic centre of Vancouver, the area where Vancouver started and today, it is registered as a national historic site. The name comes from "Gassy" Jack Deighton, a Yorkshire seaman, who arrived in 1867 and opened the area's first salon.
It lost all but two of its buildings in the great fire of 1886, with the area being immediately rebuilt and that is part of why there is a fairly consistent look.
