Avignon
Its history goes back prior to when it flourished as a Roman town. The golden age started in 1309 when Pope Clement V, a Frenchman, moved the papal court from Rome due to political instability in Italy, to Avignon. The papal court remained in Avignon until 1377. The monumental Gothic palace is the largest of its kind in the world.
The town is circled with its 14th century defensive walls completed with battlements and towers. Like many towns in France, Avignon has a vibrant market.
Hôtel des Monnaies, built in 1619 by Cardinal Scipione Borghese, legate of Pope Paul V. It was the mint. In 2018 it transformed into a boutique hotel.
