In the 9th Century Ravello was an importnat merchant town in the Republic of Amalfi. By the 12th Century, 25000 people lived there, a number of palaces of noble families. Some destroyed in 1137 by the Republic of Pisa, most moved to Naples. During WWII,m the king of Italy livied at the Palazzo Priscopio.
Villa Cimbrone dates to the 11th Century and belonged to the Acconciajoco Family, it changed hands over the centuries, in 1904 acquired by Ernest William Becket who built battlementsk terraces and cloisters in moch-Gothic, Moorish and Venetia architecture.
